Democracy?

The word “democracy” does not appear in the Declaration of Independence. While the Declaration articulates core democratic ideas, such as the consent of the governed, it doesn’t explicitly use the term. The Founding Fathers were concerned about the potential for a “tyranny of the majority” and opted to establish a republic rather than a direct democracy.

A Tyranny of the Majority is what those using the word Democracy are trying to encourage!

The word “democracy” does not appear in the U.S. Constitution. While the Constitution establishes a system of government with democratic elements, such as elections, the term itself is not used. Instead, the Constitution creates a republic, specifically a constitutional federal republic.

I wish more politicians would quote this every time a person in the media, opposing party, or just in a conversation on a plane. The more we allow the word “Democracy,” the closer we get to becoming exactly that!
